“…upliftingly beautiful music... prodigiously-gifted Canadian musician ... has emerged as one of the most fascinating and compelling composers ... her voice soaring loftily as it always does in the music's many filigree lines and aristocratic elegance..." (Raul da Gama, World Music Report, MASARYK review)
Dear visitor. Thank you for coming this way. I really appreciate it and never take (anything) for granted, especially not during the times of worldwide trauma that is shaking us up to the core. 2020 was shaping up to be a monumental year for my work, with a new music/ theatre production, The Thieves of Dreams, to premiere in Toronto and Washington. As for most artists, everything got cancelled. Festivals, shows, tours.
I am so happy to report that now, in October 2021, the various components of The Thieves of Dreams are slowly taking shape. Of the double album, the Czech-language record is nearing completion, to be released in early 2022. The film, shot by Jon Clemens and recorded by Jim Zolis, is being edited. Two music videos are nearly done. The poetry book is half-translated by Alena Jiraskova in Sydney, Australia. The stage show had a preview performance for an invited audience at the Melody Meadows Barn; it felt great, with a good flow. I was assisted by director Leah Cherniak in writing the script. We hope to perform it again.
NB: I am grateful for the support I have received through our Canadian funding agencies: I received a Music Creation grant from the Ontario Arts Council, which enabled me to commission five composers to write music for the Thieves of Dreams project; project grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council that enabled me to record a double album of this material and create the stage production. I am also thankful to the Toronto Downtown Jazz festival for choosing my production as one of its Special Projects that was to be presented at the Music Gallery. Meanwhile, my Yiddish songbook is again on the back burner- but it will happen! It will gather many new songs plus many favourites written over the years. There will also be, eventually, a new Yiddish album to complement the songbook. But that is most likely to happen in late 2022.
On this site, you will find many audio samples and info about my many projects stemming from my several identities (in Czech, Yiddish, Hebrew, English) under the tab 'Projects.' You can also view some new videos, with several more in the pipeline, in 'videos.' I will appreciate greatly if you subscribe to my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/LenkaLichtenbergMusic.
Thanks again for visiting! I hope you find something you like, something that will make your day sweeter. If so, you can drop me a line here; I will love it.
Stay healthy and hug your loved ones, if you can.
